County offers bargain on NOAA All-Hazards Weather Radios
By County Supv. Dave de Felice
To provide maximum safety from floods, tornadoes, serious storms and other serious occurrences, Dane County Emergency Management has made bulk purchases of National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA) All-Hazards radios and has re-sold them at-cost to the public at large. This program is a great success, with nearly 18,000 radios sold.
The radio receivers behave like smoke detectors, they monitor silently and when a weather event occurs an alert is sounded providing more time to respond.
The radio is the Midland model WR-100 (see link below). The cost is $23.70 per radio plus $1.30 sales tax for a total cost of $25.00. This is a significant price break, as the usual price for this radio is about $50.00. And the cost includes 4-AA batteries to provide back-up power in the event of a power outage.
Here is where the radios are sold. A phone number is included if you have questions:
Public Safety Building
115 West Doty Street - Rm. 2107
Madison, WI 53703
Ph: 266-4330
Hours: 7:45 to 4:30, Monday through Friday (unless there's a mandated furlough day for county employees)
A NOAA All-Hazards radio receives broadcasts exclusively from the National Weather Service. The radio can provide rapid warning, direct from the source, when hazardous weather conditions pose a threat to life and property. It is also an "all-hazards" warning system, used not only for immediate flood or tornado related events, but also the release of hazardous materials and other serious local events.
In addition, this radio is programmable, allowing the user to set it up to alert for only the event types and locations they are concerned about. Older type weather alert radios did not have this feature.
Wishing you a safe, healthy and happy summer!

Eastern Tent Caterpillars have been spotted on crabapple trees in the neighborhood.
Here is some helpful information from Marla Eddy, City Forester and one of our neighbors:
The eastern tent caterpillar is native to the United States. Although these caterpillars can cause the defoliation of a tree they are relatively harmless. Most trees survive these caterpillar attacks
unless they are weakened by other factors such as disease or climate and environmental stresses.
Homeowners can find insecticide products at their local garden center but I recommend a simple non-chemical solution. Homeowners with a gloved hand can simply scrape the nest off onto the ground and crush the caterpillars or drop them into a pan of soapy water. The best time to visit the nest is early morning or evening as this is when most of the caterpillars are huddled up in their tent.

American Red Cross Beach Days Blood Drive
Did you know, approximately 38% of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood but only 8% donate. Each day about 38,000 red blood cell units are used by patients in the United States. Blood
donations can drop during the summer when many blood donors are vacationing and busy with other activities. However, the need for blood doesn't take a vacation. The need
is constant.
To help with summer blood needs, the 10th Annual American Red Cross Beach Days is being promoted to educate the public about the need for blood and provide a fun donation atmosphere during the
summer.
Donation locations
Tuesday, June 29th-"Beach Days Kick-Off Blood Drive" at the Sheraton Hotel,
706 John Nolen Drive - Noon-6:00 pm
(every presenting donor will receive a Red Cross t-shirt - on June 29th only)
and
Wednesday through Saturday, June 30th, July 1st, 2nd & 3rd
Madison West Donor Center - 4860 Sheboygan Avenue
Madison East Donor Center - 2109 Zeier Road
Enjoy special summer refreshments and every presenting donor has a chance to win great raffle prizes. This event is made possible by donations from many generous sponsors. It would be greatly appreciated if you could help us with the promotion of this life-saving event. Please include the drop-in article in your newsletter, announce the blood drive at your meetings, post on your website and encourage your neighbors to give blood during the summer and give the "gift of life."
Call 1-800-GIVE LIFE (800-448-3543) or visit www.redcrossblood.org to make a blood donation appointment or find Madison Donor Center hours. Call the Donor and Client Support Center at 1-866-236-3276 for age, height and weight requirements or ask medical or travel related eligibility questions.
Pedal for the House
Welcome to the 3rd Annual Pedal for the House Charity Bike Ride (Formerly the Ronald McDonald House Charity Bike Ride) benefiting the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Madison. The event has
undergone a name change but it is still the same exceptional event that you have come to know and trust. Pedal For The House is an IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Your registration
fees and generous donations are tax deductible.
Pedal For The House is a one-day cycling event that starts and ends at Tollefson Park, Verona, WI. There are four varying routes that have something for everyone. The family-friendly 10-mile route is
a great for most ages and abilities. There is a hill or two that will definitely get your heart pumping! There is a Fun Loop that winds around the park and is ideal for walkers, strollers,
wheelchairs, tricycles and anyone who wants the ultimate Fun Loop! New this year, we've added a 20-mile route. Please don't let the shorter distance fool you...this route is quite hilly! The 40 and
60-mile routes are for the avid cyclists that REALLY enjoy a challenge and some pretty good climbs. While these routes are very beautiful they are also very challenging.
There is a delicious post-ride meal after the event that is for the all participants, riders and volunteers. There will be children's entertainment at the park for our smaller riders and those who are relaxing. There will be a bounce house, face painter and an art/crafts table! Introducing the SHARE Food Buying Network
SHARE is a nonprofit food buying network that can save you 30- 50% on groceries. SHARE works like a co-op-the more people who purchase food, the better the prices become for everyone. There are no income limits or restrictions to participate in SHARE. There are no membership fees or monthly commitments. SHARE is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and has many food distribution sites in Madison and throughout Dane County.
SHARE offers a choice of pre-selected foods including meats, organics, canned goods, and fresh fruits and vegetables. The menu changes monthly, and you can choose what you want according to your tastes and dietary requirements.
Food is ordered around the first of the month and delivered to a pick-up site near you towards the end of the month. Pick-up happens on a Saturday morning during a scheduled time.
A person becomes a member by just ordering food. To learn how to do that, visit the website www.sharewi.org. Complete information is available and you can even order on-line using a credit or debit card. Other methods of ordering are also available including ordering with the use of checks, cash, and Quest Cards. Please call Mary Kay Clark at (608) 575-2344 or Margie Blumer-Darling at (608) 843-8405, who are also available to give presentations, possibly at any of your regularly scheduled meetings.
Madison Meals on Wheels
Can you help make the noon meal an "Event" for the elderly homebound and disabled in Madison, Monona and Middleton? You may be the only person a recipient sees that day, providing a safety check in addition to social contact. Home Health United Meals on Wheels delivers meals every day of the year with a route taking about an hour. Very specific directions are given to each recipients' home and we will work with any schedule. Also, if you know of someone who is in need of meals please let us know. Contact Sue Barker at 276-7598 or our web site www.HomeHealthUnited.org for more information.
